Spartan Recreation offers students the chance to participate in epic Outdoor Adventures like hiking, camping, surfing, rock climbing, and mountain biking.
All outings are led by student leaders and local experts who are ready to share their passion and outdoor knowledge with you.
No matter your experience level, you won’t find a more welcoming group to wander, connect and grow with.

Upcoming Trips
Ski or Snowboard Adventure
Trip Dates: January 19-20, 2026
Registration Fee: $175 SJSU Students only

Trip Brief: Kick off the Spring semester with an epic trip to the slopes! Join us for a beginner-friendly, overnight ski or snowboard adventure to Dodge Ridge Resort. We will be staying overnight in Sonora, Ca. and then spending one day on the slopes. We will provide transportation, rental gear, lift tickets, overnight lodging, and lessons. All you need to being is your warm clothes, personal food, and an attitude for adventure. Sign up today at the front desk of the Rec Center!
Special NOTE: We will not be allowing personal skis and snowboards on this trip.
Muir Woods and Beach Hike
Trip Dates: February 7, 2026
Registration Fee: $50 SJSU Students only

Trip Brief: Get outside and join us for a day hike along the coast! We will spend the day hiking among towering redwoods, exploring the coastline, and enjoying some time by the ocean. We will provide transportation and trip leaders so you can focus on getting outside, relaxing, and having fun.
This is a Level 1 trip and is open to all experience levels. We’ll share more trip details and the meeting time as the trip gets closer. Spots fill up fast, so swing by the Rec Center to sign up!

Channel Islands National Park Camp and Hike
Trip Dates: March 12-15, 2026
Registration Fee: $180 SJSU Students only

Trip Brief: Join us for a 4-day, 3-night adventure to the beautiful Channel Islands National Park! This trip will combine backpacking, camping, and day hiking. We’ll hop on the ferry, backpack a short distance to our campsite, and spend a couple of days exploring the island, taking in the coastline, spotting wildlife, and enjoying the outdoors!
We’ll provide all gear, transportation, ferry tickets, and trip leaders, so you can focus on the adventure.
This is a Level 3 multi-day trip. We’ll be in a remote area, so some prior hiking experience is required. Spots fill up fast, so swing by the Rec Center to sign up!

Castle Rock Day Hike
Trip Dates: March 21, 2026
Registration Fee: $40 SJSU Students only

Trip Brief: Come explore Castle Rock State Park with us! We’ll hike scenic trails, check out unique rock formations, and take in amazing views of the surrounding landscape. This trip is a great way to get some fresh air, stretch your legs, and spend time outdoors with friends.
We’ll provide transportation and trip leaders, so all you need to do is show up ready to hike.
This is a Level 2 trip, including moderate distance and terrain. This is a great option for beginner hikers looking for a bit of a challenge, but open to all. We’ll share more trip details and the meeting time as the trip gets closer. Spots fill up fast, so swing by the Rec Center to sign up!

All Outdoor Adventure Trips are for all skill levels. Beginners are not only welcome, but encouraged to join us!
How to Sign Up
Visit the Front Desk at the SRAC to sign up. Trip prices are for current SJSU students only with a valid SRAC membership, unless a non-student pricing is specified.
More details about the trip will be emailed after sign up. Trip logistics are typically emailed one week prior to departure.
Trip Difficulty Guide
Our goal is to help you challenge yourself while also setting you up for a positive, safe experience. If you’re unsure what level is right for you, please reach out. Our staff is happy to help you decide!
Level 1 - Short distance, easy terrain. No experience needed.
Level 2 - Moderate mileage and terrain. Open to all.
Level 3- Longer day hikes or intro-level multi-day trips. Longer days and/or remote settings. Some prior hiking or overnight experience is recommended.
Level 4- Multi-day trips with significant mileage and rugged terrain. Experience required.
Level 5 - Advanced multi-day trips with long, strenuous days. Strong fitness and experience required.
